Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Analysis

(including Backscatter and Cathodoluminescence) plus EDAX facility

SEM AnalysisCOREX’s Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis provides valuable and highly detailed information on clay and cement distribution, pore geometries and on the microstratigraphy of the mineralogical phases. The SEM is further equipped with a backscatter facility which enables recognition of different mineral phases.

Along with SEM analysis, COREX can provide Energy Dispersive Analysis of X-rays (EDAX) facility, which provides a useful tool for mineral identification and semi-quantitative chemical analysis.

At COREX, we can provide the following SEM analysis services:

SEM analysis provides visual detailed information on clay and cement distribution, pore geometries and on the microstratigraphy of the mineralogical phases. SEM is a powerful tool to highlight the pattern of pore cementation by authigenic clays or carbonate cements and help understand their impact on pore geometries, porosity and permeability confinement in rocks.

  • Providing EDAX (EDS / Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis) plots with every image, allow the recognition of the mineral phases present in the sample.

  • COREX’s geologists use cathodoluminescence to allow recognition of the typomorphic characteristics of minerals, providing the Client information on the distribution and chronology of the mineralogical and cementation phases. For example, this information can be used to identify the minerals burial history, thus helping identify and reconstruct the history of the pore / vug system.
